This is where OCPP (Open Charge Point Protocol) swoops in like a caped crusader to save the day!

The OCPP Core Profile is the backbone of EV charging station communication, ensuring your car gets the juice it needs without drama. Let’s take a fun ride through its features and why it’s basically the traffic cop of the EV world.

What is OCPP?

OCPP is the universal translator for EV charge points and central management systems. It makes sure different chargers and backends can chat like best buddies, even if they’ve never met before. Without OCPP, every charger would be speaking its own language, leading to absolute chaos — like a group project where nobody knows what’s going on.


The OCPP Core Profile: The Essential Superpowers

Think of the OCPP Core Profile as the “must-have” toolkit for charge points. Without it, a charge point is like a superhero without powers — just a guy in spandex. Here’s what makes it awesome:

1. Boot Notification — “I’m Alive!”

Whenever a charge point wakes up (or reboots after a power nap), it announces itself with a BootNotification. It’s like saying, “Hey, central system, I’m here, I exist, and here’s my firmware version in case you care.” The central system then gives a thumbs-up (or a concerned look if something’s wrong).

2. Heartbeat — “Still Kicking!”

Charge points send Heartbeat messages to let the central system know they haven’t ghosted it. Think of it as your charger’s way of saying, “Still here, not dead yet!”

3. Authorization — “Are You Cool Enough to Charge?”

Before a charging session begins, the charge point checks if the user is legit. Methods include:

  • RFID Cards: Like a VIP pass for your EV.

  • Remote Authorization: The central system gives a digital nod of approval.

  • Local Lists: “I’ve seen you before, you’re good to go.”

4. Start and Stop Transactions — “Show Me the Energy!”

Every charging session starts with a StartTransaction message and ends with a StopTransaction. It’s like clocking in and out at work, but for your car. The system tracks the energy used so you can get the bill (because nothing in life is free, sadly).

5. Status Notifications — “Mood Swings of a Charge Point”

Charge points are quite expressive. They send StatusNotification messages whenever they feel different:

  • Available: “Come at me, EVs!”

  • Charging: “Busy, do not disturb.”

  • Faulted: “I have an issue… help?”

6. Meter Values — “Keeping Tabs on the Juice”

Your charge point keeps track of energy usage and reports it with MeterValues. Think of it as a food diary, but for electrons instead of calories.

7. Firmware Updates — “Time for a Makeover”

The central system can remotely send a FirmwareUpdate, which is basically the charge point’s version of a software update. Hopefully, no charger ever mutters, “I liked my old firmware better.”

8. Remote Commands — “Do as I Say”

The central system can boss around charge points by sending commands like:

  • RemoteStartTransaction/RemoteStopTransaction: “Start charging now!” or “Stop it!”
